Empowerment to Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse

It is the birth right of every human being to live with honor and dignity. It can never be too late to bring the dignity back into the lives of the survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA). If CSA is not addressed and if individuals are not assisted in coming to terms and recover from the trauma at some point of their lives, it can have both short term and long term impacts. As affected children, they may exhibit extreme aggressive or passive behaviors, eating disorders, inappropriate sexual behaviors, and unable to focus in academics. As adults, they may have major loss of trust in people, in relationships both at the personal and professional arena.

While CSA can be traumatic and can play havoc in an individual’s life, Mrs. Saras Bhaskar believes that impact of child sexual abuse can be overcome through counseling and therapy and the survivors of CSA can indeed lead a functional life. Her goal in 2010 is to sensitize the general public about the Child Sexual Abuse and offer short and long term professional therapeutic intervention. Her mission in this venture is two-fold and they are as follows:

Healing through individual counseling/therapy

For children: Help children overcome the trauma through therapeutic interventions. It can be through relevant counseling techniques that will help heal the emotional scars so that they do not carry the burden of abuse to their adult lives.

For adults: When some individuals receive the sexual experience much earlier in their life even before their biological hormones are ready and prepared to receive it, it can be a confusing and continuing trauma in their adult life. Counseling will be offered through short term treatment or therapy will be conducted through long term healing process.

The ultimate goal of the therapeutic intervention is to develop insight to the survivors and empower them to understand that no one has the right to sabotage their mental and emotional well being and that they can emerge as strong human beings.
